Boat Rental:

Great Pond Marina on the lake:
207-495-2213 or (in Maine). Reserve a skit boat, pontoon boat, fishing boat, kayak, sailboat, canoe. Located on Rte. 27, about 1 mile south of Belgrade Lakes Village.

Belgrade Lakes and Rome:

  • The Village Inn: 495-3553. On Rte. 27 in Belgrade Lakes Village. Duck, seafood, steak, salad bar. Take the boat over, going up the quaint channel to Village for lunch or dinner.
  • Wing's Hill: Gourmet dining, four-course meals. Bring your own wine. 207-495-2400. Make reservations.
  • Laze Lab Cafe:  In Village. 207-495-2872. www.lazylabcafe.com
  • Sweet Dreams: General store with take-out pizza, hamburgers, soft and hard ice cream, etc. Go out Jamaica Point Road and make right on Rte. 225. Go one mile to end and make right on Rte. 137. Sweet Dreams is immediately on right.
  • Sunset Grill just outside Belgrade Lakes Village. 495-2439. General inexpensive fare.
  • Day’s Store in Belgrade Lakes village prepares take-out lobsters and offers take out sandwiches, etc. 495-2205.

Waterville and Oakland:

  • Riverside Market for outdoor lunch dining in lovely store in Oakland on Rte. 23 (Fairfield Street). 465-4439. Take right at 225 to end. Make right and immediately left following Rte. 137 to Oakland. Cross lights and RR tracks. At next lights at five-corner intersection take left at Rte. 23. Riverside is about one mile on right.
  • Silver Street Restaurant in downtown Waterville: 873-2277.
  • The Last Unicorn in downtown Waterville, next to Silver Street Restaurant.

Skowhegan:
  • Old Mill Pub Restaurant on scenic Kennebec River dam in downtown Skowhegan. Right onto Rte. 225, left onto Rte. 137 to Rte. 8 to Rte. 2. Nice sunset drive overlooking North Pond and Mountains.
  • Village House in Skowhegan in elegant country home. Pat Skowhegan downtown, three-quarts around “circle” and up 201 on your left.
  • Candlelight Restaurant in downtown Skowhegan across from Old Mill Pub

Food Stores
  • 24-hour Shaws on Rte. 137 (Kennedy Memorial Drive) in Waterville. Take 137 into Waterville. Cross Rte. 95 and Shaws is on left immediately past Walmart’s on right.

  • Day’s General Store in Belgrade Lakes Village: 495-2205. Call up for fresh, cooked lobsters. Open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Shop & Save: Main Street, downtown Waterville shopping concourse

  • Buddie’s grocery store in downtown Oakland.

    • Waterville Country Club: right turn off Rte. 137 about half mile past Mobil station at five-corners intersection.

    • Champions: Waterville, Elm Plaza. 972-7965. Take 137 to Rte. 95 North. First exit is Main Street. Turn right and Champions is short distance on right.
    • Holiday Inn Restaurant and Bar: 873-0111. 375 Upper Main St. Waterville.

    Antiques
    • Fairfield Antiques Mall: 453-4100. Rout 201. Exit 36 off I-95 North. North on Rte. 201 for 2.5 miles. Open 9 to 5. 453-4100.
    • Julia-Poulin Antiques: 453-2114. Nice merchandise and dried-flower wreaths, etc. Down road on 201 from Fairfield Antiques, above.
    • Borseen Antiques: Belgrade. 495-2013. Rte. 135. Country antiques.

    Amusements
    • Gifford’s Batting Cage and Mini Golf in Waterville, Rte. 137 past I-95 for about two miles. As road curses to left, cage is immediately on right.
    • Riverside Bowling Center (10-pin) and arcade. Pool tables. Sportsters pub with large screens. 873-3739. 155 West River Road in Waterville, off Rte. 137. Make a right turn onto road as 137 bends to left at light. If you pass Gifford’s batting cage/mini golf/ice cream.

    Local Scenic Drives and Destinations
    • Blueberry Hill, nice overlook of lakes. Out Jamaica Point Rd. Take left onto Rte. 225 to end. Make right on Rte. 27. Take left onto first road. Pass Rome Strawberry Patch on left and proceed about 4-5 miles. Look for dirt road on left marked by “Blueberry Hill” sign. Short drive to top.
    • French’s Mountain, a 20-minute hike brings you to wonderful rock-ledge peaks overlooking lakes. Bring bottle of wine or picnic lunch. About 1 mile after Strawberry Patch on left. (Blueberry Hill is several mile up same road, so see directions above). Entrance to French’s Mountain trail is across from “A” frame house on right.

    Nice Maine day trips
    • Antiquing in Hallowell to Wiscassett to Ocean Point to Boothbay Harbor. Ret. 27 South through Augusta. Take Rte. 201, passing state capital on right. Quaint Hallowell town is along Kennebec River. Slates Restaurant is great for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Continue on to pretty bayside town of Wiscassett for more antiquing. Continue on, following signs for Ocean Point. Park and walk along Ocean-weathered rocks and beautiful homes and flowers. On return proceed to Boothbay Harbor, the Key West of Maine, but nicer and less touristy. Have drinks and dinner beside ocean at sunset. Whale and seal-watching trips. Deep-sea fishing.
    • Quaint town of Belfast on Penobscott Bay. One-and-one-half hour drive. Nicer and less touristy and less crowded than Camden.
    • Mohegan Island: (2 1⁄2 hours) Charming artist colony, forest walks, nice inns. Ferry leaves from Port Clyde or Boothbay Harbor.
    • L.L Beans in Freeport. Slightly more than one hour. Take I -95 to Freeport. Open 24 hours, 365 days per year. Combine this trip with trek to Portland and charming Oldport waterfront district.

    Down the road a peck
    • Sugarloaf Mountain
    • Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor
    • Mount Katahdin within Baxster State Park (way up there) – the end of the Appalachian Trail.
